I took two quarters of classes at Wheelhouse Clay in San Francisco to learn how to work with clay. I was excited to make physical art with my hands and was also thinking that physical sculpting skills would complement my digital 3D modeling skills.
I’m definitely still a beginner but here are some pieces I’m proud of! These were constructed using handbuilding and wheel techniques.
Working with clay and learning the tools used for physical sculpting really did improve my 3D sculpting skills! Digital sculpting tools in 3D software usually recreate physical techniques, and so hands-on experience made those metaphors click in a new way for me. And I found myself much more aware of form and curvature of surfaces.
