Smart Skateboard

A computerized skateboard addon that responds to movement with interactive LED lighting. It uses a Raspberry Pi, sensing board, and addressable LED strips.

I led a small team that designed, coded, and demoed this in USC Corpus Callosum, an organization which creates installations combining art and technology.

The light chase animation speeds up if you go faster. An IMU measures acceleration and a magnetometer measures the oscillating field strength of a wheel magnet while the wheel is turning to calculate velocity and rough distance.

  • Green or red lights indicate when the skateboard is speeding up or stopping, for safety and visibility
  • Patterns chase along the sides of the skateboard at the speed of the skateboard for an interesting “scrolling through the world” effect
  • Cycling rainbow colors look neat 😎
